Employment Advice
Often refugees cannot find work, or can only find low-paid jobs because their skills and qualifications are not recognised. (Over 30% of refugees in the UK have a degree or professional qualification). This can be very depressing, so we talk to people about their aspirations and help them to decide how they can best achieve them.
Often this will entail some study or vocational training, and we can help them to identify and apply for suitable training courses. Our employment advice is currently delivered through the Wheatsheaf Trust's Employment Access Centre. For directions go to www.wheatsheaftrust.org.
Business Start-Up Support
If people have a good business idea that they would like to explore, we can provide support. We can discuss their plans, look at the problems they might face, and suggest ways to get help. Last year (2006) we ran a Business Start-Up Course, which was aimed specifically at refugees, and we plan to run another course beginning in September 2007.
We are partnered in delivering this course by Southampton Solent University Business School www.solent.ac.uk/sbs/sbs, Lady in Red, and Southampton City College www.southampton-city.ac.uk.
If you would like to apply for the course call Allegra Carlton on (023) 8022 2271, or e-mail allegra@clearproject.org.uk.
